Electrify America is announcing the doubling of its charging network through 2025 with 10,000 chargers at 1,800 fast-charging stations in the US and Canada. While Electrify America was started through the EPA and CARB forcing Volkswagen to spend $2 billion on EV charging infrastructure in the US, the result is that Volkswagen now has the top fast-charging network open to all electric vehicles in the US. It was expected that the company would go beyond its required investment and keep developing its network, which could soon turn into a big business as more electric vehicles are being deployed in the US. Today, Electrify America is announcing what it calls its “Boost Plan,” which consists of a doubling of its charger deployment plan...
Ford has patented a removable range extender for an electric pickup that sits in the bed and resembles a toolbox. The Drive first spotted the patent, submitted in April 2018 and published on September 15, 2020. Its illustrations show a removable range extender that sits in the bed of a truck and looks like a toolbox. Inside the device would be a small motor, fuel tank, exhaust system, and electronics needed to hook it up to an electric truck. The abstract for the patent states: "This disclosure details electrified vehicles that are equipped with removable generators for increasing the electric range of the vehicles. An exemplary electrified vehicle includes a cargo space, such as a truck bed, and a generator removably positioned...
Panelists at a Ford-sponsored City of Tomorrow conference say electric vehicles could ease climate change-induced grid strain, but many factors could hamper large shifts away from fossil fuels. Ford's F150 Lightning electric vehicle has the ability to power homes and other businesses, Ford GM of battery electric vehicles Darren Palmer said at a Ford-sponsored City of Tomorrow summit on electrification. But, other panelists pointed out, electrification includes a number of infrastructure dilemmas that may make its widespread rollout slower than Ford, and EV proponents, may like. The panel, titled "It Takes a Village: The Price and Promise of Electrification," covered a number of electrified transportation topics, including issues of...
SK Innovation managed to escape from a U.S. ban to pull off something extraordinary. One of the cars it plans to power, the Ford F-150 Lightning, will receive the most powerful lithium-ion battery to date. Called NCM9, it has a proportion of nickel that reaches approximately 90% of its composition. That would make it the most energy-dense cell currently available. The Korean company revealed that at InterBattery 202, the largest battery industry exhibition in its home country. Sadly, SK Innovation did not disclose how energy-dense its nickel-rich cell is. We’ll try to learn that from the company itself. Regardless of how much it is, that makes Ford be ahead of Tesla when it comes to battery tech. Tesla said its 4680 cells would also...
One of the biggest selling points of electric vehicles is their low maintenance and fuel costs, both for normal consumers and fleet customers. That’s something that was touted when the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Pro was revealed last month as well. Now, a new Department of Energy (DOE) study backs up automaker’s initial claims about the Ford F-150 Lightning Pro cost savings with some interesting data. The study takes a look at every single maintenance item related to both ICE and BEV light-duty vehicles, then calculates an estimated scheduled maintenance cost for each. Unsurprisingly, since BEVs lack many of the wear components present in ICE vehicles – including things like spark plugs, oil, timing belts, sensors, and more –...
We recently covered Ford’s warning that body shops might need to remove hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric batteries before subjecting such electrified powertrains to certain paint booth heat conditions. “The temperature in some body shop paint booths can exceed 60°C (140°F),” Ford wrote in its recent “On Target’ newsletter for the collision industry. “Therefore, during refinishing operations, the paint booth temperature must be set at or below 60°C (140°F) with a bake time of 45 minutes or less. Temperatures in excess of 60°C (140°F) or bake durations longer than 45 minutes will require the (high-voltage battery) and the (high-voltage traction battery) to be removed from the vehicle prior to placing it in the paint booth.”...
"I think that (the programs) are a step forward," said Commissioner Tyler Huebner. "As we look at electric vehicles, I will note a lot more models are coming out, including the Ford Lightning model that was a very different vehicle than anything we've seen before." Democratic Gov. Tony Evers proposed using $5 million in bonding in the next two-year budget to allow greater development of electric charging infrastructure in Wisconsin. Limited charging infrastructure is one of the most common barriers to speeding up the transition to electric vehicles in the state. Wisconsin has around 110 fast-charging stations and nearly 400 "Level 2" public charging stations that allow vehicles to go about 20 miles for an hour of charge, according to...
