I decided to test drive a Cybertruck to see firsthand what it was like. So, I scheduled a test drive yesterday and picked up the truck in downtown Austin in a congested industrial park. I was anxious to try the FSD (Full Self Driving) because I had heard how good the newest update was. I jumped in the truck, and the salesperson explained everything to me where I felt comfortable with all the controls. I picked a random coffee shop in the navigation, activated the FSD, and off we went! I hovered over the controls and brake to take over whenever I felt uncomfortable. Along the route was every kind of random city obstacle you could imagine. There were trucks with trailers half parked on the road, a guy trying to back into a spot that took up the road for a good minute, pedestrians, people on bikes, protruding curbs, etc., and the Cybertruck navigated around it all perfectly! It was so good, and we were having so much fun being easily driven around the city that we let it shuttle us around to do all of our errands for an hour. The cabin feels futuristic and very quiet. I didn't notice any squeaks or creeks. The seats were super comfortable and well-bolstered. Overall, the interior was a lovely place to be. The large center screen and tech are the best in the business, and the stereo is fantastic!
Are the looks polarizing? Yes! But everything else about it is excellent! So much so that I left the test drive trying to figure out how to add one to my stable.
Being the ultimate petrolhead, the test drive completely changed my mind about the Cybertruck. Does it make sense as your only vehicle? Probably not, but having one as a second or third vehicle is an attractive proposition. If you genuinely enjoy new vehicles, gear, and tech, you will like what the Cybertruck does well, even if the exterior design isn't your thing. I suggest scheduling a test drive and giving it an honest chance. If anything, you will get a kick out of seeing where automotive technology is headed.
