I picked up my new 2025 Cybertruck ten days ago and was super stoked to use the Full Self-Driving feature on the highway drive home. Before leaving the Tesla Service Center, I ensured I had signed up and completed the Premium Connectivity and Full Self-Driving Capability Subscription. When I left the Tesla Center, I noticed that the FSD performed a calibration sequence with the system. Everything was completed fine before we stopped and had lunch. After lunch, I assumed I had FSD and could use it on the highway on our hour-and-a-half drive home. However, this was not the case. I only had access to the standard cruise control. I thought it was still calibrating and I would have the FSD feature by the end of the day after I put more miles on the truck. After putting about 100 miles on the truck that day, there was still no FSD. So, I called Tesla to see what was up.
They said that new Cybertrucks come with basic delivery software and that I would receive an update with the full FSD software in about a week or two. I was a bit bummed by this because I was really excited to show my family and friends this new tech that I had been bragging about since my initial test drive of a Cybertruck. However, fortunate enough to have purchased numerous new vehicles, I know that a conservative break-in procedure is usually required, especially for a feature as serious as Full Self-Driving.
So, I patiently waited for my update and watched my Tesla App and Cybertruck closely to see if any notable milestones needed to be met before receiving the update. After seven business days from picking up my Cybertruck, I finally received the update with 475 miles on the odometer. So the Tesla Service Rep was right when they said I should see the update in about a week. I had picked up my truck on a Saturday and hoped to receive the update the following Saturday, but it was the following Monday morning.
Here are a few things I learned from talking with a Tesla Service Rep that can help you speed up getting the update. Make sure your Tesla is connected to your home Wi-Fi with a strong signal (this was easy for me because I park in the garage and have a good Wi-Fi signal there), and make sure you change the Software Controls in your truck from Standard to Advanced.
The advanced software update setting in a Tesla allows you to receive software updates as soon as they are available.
How to enable advanced software updates:
- Go to Controls
- Select Software
- Select Software Update Preference
- Choose ADVANCED
- Receive software updates as soon as they are available
- Be an early adopter of new features and improvements
